the key is knowing the full potential of the pokemon you are using. use serebii.net to learn what moves your pokemon CAN have, as well as their max stats. then breed for the perfect pokemon. it takes time, but the end result is amazing!

probably my best pokemon i have is (believe it or not) a Gastrodon. their only weakness is grass type.
moves for gastrodon:
muddy water (same as surf, only attacks opponents tho)
ice beam
earthquake
recover
this pokemon has completely wiped out entire trainers before, ev trained of course. with Storm Drain, you can pair this poke with a fire type (a fast one to take out grass types) and the fire type can rest, knowing no water will hit it.

the fire type i use is an infernape, bred for attack power and speed, then ev trained. moves: flare blitz, close combat, and aerial ace. I also bred Thunder Punch into it to take care of water types. the infernape will one hit kill almost anything with it's stats.

Luxray is good, but i got rid of mine for a raichu with surf from my Battle Revolution game. having surf really helps wipe out those ground types.

Another often overlooked pokemon are the stallers. One of my faves is my Clefable. they are a virtual tank. I bred to get one with high def and special def, with little or no attack/sp.attk and magic guard. moves for this poke: learned pre-evolution: moonlight (recover hp), follow me (takes all attacks), and defence curl (raise def). last, get minimize when you change the clefairy to a clefable.
use minimize to make your evasiveness MAX out, then use follow me to absorb all attacks. with maxed evasiveness, VERY few attacks will hit you, and both opponents will have to attack you. if they hit you, they hit a tank, and leftovers will often refill you over the next couple turns, if not, moonlight!

all of this leaves your second pokemon free to attack all they want, with no risk of getting hit.

the key to a good team is rounding the moves within each pokemon, so that they aren't only good for 1 or 2 types of opponents. if you have a pair of pokemon that cover ALL of the different types out there, you've got a wicked pair.

second, training, and raising the first pokemon you catch will be a waste of time. be patient (if you can) and breed your pokemon together until you get an amazing one, THEN invest the time into training it.

and last, use serebii!!! they have ALL the info you need for building a good team, and optimizing your pokes!
