Photographic Hints, Tips, Techniques and Tricks for taking Beautiful Landscape Pictures

Nature and landscape photography represent an area of the photographic art which requires specialized skills. As we all know, practice makes perfect and over time, with the right shooting advice and some handy photographic techniques, tips, tools and tricks, taking beautiful landscape photographs can be mastered and your shot making can improve  to the point that your photos really begin to capture some of the essence of the great places that you get to visit.

One of the photographic techniques that I find really useful, as obvious as it may sound, is making sure that I always have my camera with me when I head out. It can be quite surprising when revisiting an area that we think we know.  Things change all the time. Maybe the lighting is different. Perhaps you are passing through at a different time of the day and a scene that hadn’t previously imposed any particular sense of drama suddenly impresses you.

I recall driving through an area many times before. There was a long white sand beach with a bridge over a stream at the northern end. I had even picnicked and swum at the northern end of the beach last summer. In the intervening months since I had last visited the beach, the local council had built a path under the bridge and alongside the stream bed as part of a beautification process opening up an area which wasn’t previously accessible from the beach.

As a result I was able to acquire some very pretty landscapes where I wasn’t really expecting anything in particular.  So even if you are familiar with an area, remember not to take things for granted. People and places do change and often over shorter time-frames than what you might appreciate.

Especially now with the advent of digital cameras, immediate recall and the ability to shoot many pics without the handicap of time and cost of development, why not take multiple photos of the same scene. Play with different exposure settings, angles, variations in zoom. Change the perspective, turn the camera sideways through 90 degrees, or even set the horizon on diagonally opposite corners to optimize composition if that is what it takes.

Work through different shots of the same scene at different focal lengths, telephoto through to wide-angle and be surprised at how much variation can be achieved in the shot.  Eventually you will find the optimum picture which may appear to be quite different from the first impression. Capture a range of photos and make your selection afterwards rather than discard options at the time.  

With the benefit of hindsight it is possible to re-crop a shot to change the emphasis or mood. Digital storage is so cheap now that retaining shots that may be less than optimum and having a library of images for later use offers alternate cropping options to accent different aspects of the photo.  

Telephoto lenses enable magnification of a distant subject and wide angle lenses reduce the depth of field enabling more content to be included in the. Compact cameras achieve this variation through a single lens that offers variable focal length usually between 30-70 mm or similar and often with inbuilt converters that double or treble the focal length,  increasing the telephoto capability whereas with a digital SLR (DSLR) these are separately acquired hardware options and each lens or converter has different characteristics.

A lens that offers variable focal length usually between 30-70 mm is recognised as a standard zoom lens and will be able to be used in most scenarios. It is only when exploring the extremes that specialist lenses such as fish-eye, wide-angle, telephoto and converters are required.    

Adding scale to a photograph is another way to improve composition and generate a sense of the dramatic in your pictures. A large rock or tree to one side in the foreground with say a waterfall or mountain occupying the centre thirds of your photograph with the sky above, not only aids the composition but also imparts a sense of grandeur to your shot.  Adding more sky to your photograph can create a sense of “wide open spaces.”   

Changing the mood and feel of a scene can make the difference between average and stunning photographs. Allowing the setting sun, for example, to light up your shot or shooting into the sun to create silhouettes can produce wonderful shots.

Capturing sunlight through leaves or tree branches can achieve a dappled effect of light and shade to augment photographs.  Two hours after dawn and two hours before dusk are great times for shooting, enabling best use of light and shade. When the sun is higher, shadows are more intense and strong shadows require extra lighting, increasing the technical complexity of a potential shot.

Shooting buildings in cityscapes represents some interesting challenges where sunlight at certain angles can enhance building detail or by reflecting off glass and stainless steel, produce interesting light effects.

The very same shot at a different time might appear uninteresting without the detail emphasized. The sun going down between two tall buildings with the inner faces of both buildings lit up and other parts in shadow or semi-silhouette might achieve a very dramatic photograph.

Looking for reflections in puddles or other still bodies of water is a great way to add to your photographic composition and fill in the foreground with extra color to enhance your picture.

A good way to improve your understanding of landscape photography (or any other photography genre for that matter) is to take an image that you really admire from a leading exponent and pick the picture to pieces, isolating the different aspects that come together to create the photo. By identifying and analyzing the components of the photograph you come to gain an appreciation for the mechanics of the composition thus increasing your knowledge. Use the identified facets in your own photography to enhance your skills.

Unique Sydney: Circular Quay

With a prime location at the foot of Sydney's dynamic central business district, Circular Quays is an exciting place with colourful ferries berthing at the piers and chugging out onto the harbour. It also offers unequalled views of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House

Circular Quay is drenched in history being situated in the inlet of Sydney Cove. Together with the adjacent area of The Rocks, it's the founding site for Sydney as well as all of Australia. Formerly a port and shipping area, Circular Quay is now a recreational and leisure zone as well as a transport hub.

One of the first things you'll notice about Circular Quay is that it's not circular. It's shaped more like a horseshoe opening out onto the bay. Other than the ferry piers and trains station, you can find scenic walkways, parks and eateries. It's a lovely place to sit and relax in one of the cafes and take in the Sydney sunshine. To the east are some trendy, upmarket boutiques and the Dendy Cinema.

Circular Quay is also home to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Justice and Police Museum and the splendidly imposing Customs House.

One of Circular Quay’s famous spots is Macquarie Place a small, triangular park. Established in 1810, it was the first formally laid out public space in the young city of Sydney. It houses a number of historic artefacts including a cannon and anchor from the HMS Sirius, the first fleet ship, and an Obelisk which records the distances to various places in the new colony of New South Wales along the earliest roads developed there.

To the east is the Museum of Sydney which is housed in the Old Government House, built in 1788. The museum is a treasure house of lore and exhibits relating to the history of Sydney.

One interesting feature of Circular Quay is the Writers Walk. This is a series of some 50 plaques commemorating Australian writers (such as Peter Carey and Germaine Greer) and writers who have written on Australia (including D.H. Lawrence, Charles Darwin, and Joseph Conrad). The plaques, which are inscribed with the author's name and a quote, are studded around the International Passenger Terminal on West Circular Quay and on the walkway to Sydney Opera House among other places.

Circular Quay is also the perfect jumping off point for all of Sydney's attractions. Other than the ferries that depart for such places as Manly, Watson's Bay, Mosman and Taronga Park Zoo, many of the city's premier attractions are accessible on foot. From the southern side of Circular Quay, a walkway leads to the Opera House past the Royal Botanical Gardens; from the northern side, it's just a short, scenic stroll to The Rocks and Harbour Bridge.

You'll no doubt pass through Circular Quay on your travels around Sydney but you might consider making it your base to explore the city. Not only is it the most convenient location for getting around, it also offers a great range of Circular Quay hotels options including the Four Seasons Hotel and the Quay West Suites.

Try searching for a circuit diagram for your brand of guitar. If that is a bust and your circuit board is still a problem, try searching for a wiring diagram of a Strat. You can rewire the guitar like a Strat and remove the battery powered pre-amp entirely. Three pieces of advice, if you are going to keep doing this sort of thing... 1) get a good soldering iron, like an Antek... something with a low wattage or an adjustable temp, and a fine tip. 2) get an inexpensive multimeter and learn how to check continuity with the resistance setting. (I prefer one that makes a sound when there is continuity.) 3) get a couple of heat sinks to protect the stuff you are soldering.
Be aware, working on circuit boards is tricky and a really good way to destroy a circuit board. (a solder sucker or wick is nice too) Heating up a solder joint on a board to work with it requires more heat than just putting the component on the board in the first place did.

It depends on what colors your hair pulls in its normal environment. For instance, my hair pulls a lot of red when I get into the sun. So I have to watch that when I go lighter. You might have to bleach some areas of the hair to get a good green. I would suggest talking to a professional stylist first. When you dye hair you are breaking bonds in the hair that hold onto the color. However, once you break these bonds they are broken and can no longer be used. So if you dye your hair blond and then try to dye it green, the green might not hold as well on the newly dyed hair. You might also have to weight a few weeks in between since going from the black to blond is going to take a toll on your hair and the last thing you want to do is end up frying it off.

Black, Green, or Wasp Tea?

Departing from Narita, Japan, Japanese flight attendants creatively trying to put Japanese into English fail to surprise me. The first time a Western flight attendant asked me if I wanted green or black tea did surprise me though. Never having heard another native English speaker refer to black tea, or not remembering, I wondered if that was common English usage where she came from. The flight attendant explained that black tea differentiated black tea from green tea, but the term was new to her too.

Googling, I found millions of references to black tea. Wasp tea references merely numbered in the hundreds. Never having drunk wasp tea, I wondered what it would taste like. Once in Morocco, sitting outdoors on a plaza in Fez, or perhaps Marrakech, drinking sweet tea, the wasps began to gather. Attracted by the sweet scent of the tea they climbed up the spout and into the teapot. A few wasps became ten and then twenty and then over a hundred.

I don't know if wasp tea offers health benefits. Green and black tea certainly do. Living in Japan, one hears of the many health benefits that green tea offers. Green tea reduces cancer risk by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Green tea also lowers your total cholesterol levels and improves your ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. The list goes on to cover health benefits for rheumatoid arthritis, infections, and more. While green tea may not have all the powers we hear about, it does offer much.

We may think that black tea does not offer as many benefits as green tea, but black and green tea are from the same plant. They basically offer the same benefits. As green tea is less processed than black tea, black tea offers fewer antioxidants than green tea, but the difference is not as significant as one might imagine.

Milton Schiffenbauer of Pace University states that both green and black tea can fight viruses in your mouth like herpes. According to Schiffenbauer, tea also helps to prevent diarrhea, pneumonia, cystitis, and skin infections. Research at Rutgers University has shown the potential of black tea for preventing stomach, prostate, and breast cancer. Black tea contains a compound called TF-2 that may slow down cancer growth. TF-2 can kill cancer sells while leaving healthy cells untouched.

Dr. Joseph Vita of the Boston University School of Medicine has shown how black tea also fights potential heart attacks and strokes by saving our arteries. His tests compared heart patients who drank plain water with others who drank black tea. After only one month, the tea-drinking patients had improved their impaired blood vessel functioning by 50%. Additional health benefits from black tea are preventing tooth decay, lowering cholesterol, and soothing arthritis. Black tea may help us to burn fat too.

The list of benefits of green and black tea go on. For cultural reasons black tea may not have as many vocal admirers as green tea. Scientists who conduct research and black tea drinkers may just not feel as strongly as green tea researchers and drinkers. For many Japanese, green tea is more than a drink. Green tea is part of their national heritage and a source of pride. Publicizing green tea health benefits may seem like a mission to many Japanese whereas publicizing the health benefits of black tea speaks only to health for most Americans. Most of us do not identify with black tea the way Japanese do with green tea. Black tea is just a terrific drink, not a way of life. Coffee is probably more a way of life to Americans.

Either way, tea research is still in its infancy and more research is necessary on both animals and humans to further investigate and understand the health benefits of tea.
 Personally, I am pleased to hear that black tea is as healthy as green tea. I like both, but tea bags are just so easy. While you can buy green tea tea bags, making green tea from tea bags is not the way for me to drink green tea. It just seems so...

Green and black tea aside, I am now waiting to hear of the benefits of wasp tea.
