I went to one when all "disabled" kids had to go in the 80s, and it was very poor - we could go play with the toys or to matrons for a sleep if we didnt fancy the lesson - which at 11 was the favoured option! I was quickly moved to a mainstream school and am now at uni studying youth work - I went back to the special school earlier this year and the lack of a good education was still evident, but I want to know if this is an isolated case - please help doing an assignment on it!

Well Iv recently work as an LSA in a "Special" school and My son has 1:1 statement of special needs funding in a mainstream School. Im due to start uni in sept to do Early childhood studies and lingustics so I have the same route things out and find the truth rather then hearsay as you. Well the kids Iv worked with in main stream and Specialist schooling vary in abilities. However in anycase I think sticking a drum infront of a 16 yr old for two hours is not adequate schooling for any young person regardless of their understanding or ability. Many of the whole class time would be used as a gossip time which would of course go ove rthe kids heads and then they'd be spoken to if they showed signals of being bored. I fully agree that schooling has to be age appropriate for any ability. Am I babbling? proberbly but thats cos I'm still wound up about wat was deemed acceptable. Let's put ti this way, I had the choice and after weighing everything up and having workind in both my son is now flurishing at a mainstream senior school with addtional help. Not being an invisible child that gets dragged down in a specialist schooling environment.
