I don't know Kona, but I recently purchased a Takamine Jasmine from musiciansfriend.com that is excellent - it is a single cut-away which means you get access to higher notes without straining your wrist. It was only 99$ and I think it is easily worth twice that -

As far as tuning goes, the strings from top to bottom are tuned as follows: E A D G B E (Every Adult Dog Growls, Bites, Eats) and if you can approximate the top string, then you can fret it on the 5th fret and it should be an A note, then you just tweak the 5th string (the second down) until it matches the note produced by the E string on the 5th fret...5th fret all the way down the strings except the third string up you will fret on the 4th fret to produce the B note you will want to match the 2nd string up to....

I hope I explained that coherently....Oh, but you can get a cheap tuner on musiciansfriend for under 20$, so that would probably be your best bet until you learn to tune by ear...

My initial reaction was to say "no".... but it really does depend how you go about it.

Remember that humbuckers are higher output (often much higher!) than single-coils, so you're going to want a separate volume control for it, which offhand is something that I don't think a normal Strat has. Beyond that, the neck position is naturally higher output (picks up more string vibration) than the bridge, so usually you'd want a lower-output pickup in your neck position and a higher-output pickup in your bridge position to balance things out a little better.

Putting anything other than a low-output humbucker in the neck will result in unbalanced volumes, and not necessarily pleasing results, in my opinion.

If you do end up seriously considering this route, I would suggest putting a coil-tap on that humbucker - this turns off half of the humbucker, and gives you a more single-coil sound with single-coil output.

As far as pickup selection, for humbuckers I would consider the Seymour Duncan '59 or Alnico II Pro's... both are relatively low output, and give a relatively trebly or middy tone, respectively, something that I think would work well with a single-coil. I have an A2P in my LTD, and it coil-taps decently, I think.

Then again, I never seriously use the coil-tap option - I prefer higher output levels and can't stand single-coil hum/noise.

You might also consider Seymour Duncan Cool or Vintage Rails.... these are so-called noiseless single-coils.... basically stacked humbuckers that fit into a single-coil slot, so have an approximation of a single-coil tone without the single-coil hum/noise thing. Fender Lace Sensors are another example of noiseless single-coils.

Find out how to setup a guitar

If you've ever wondered how one can set-up your guitar, or your 4, five or 6 string bass guitar your self, you have come to the best place. Read on.

It is highly recommended to change your strings before you begin, and install them correctly although this is not absolutely vital.

*In all the explanations below, the headstock is pointing to your left.

In case your electric guitar has a Floyd Rose or a tremolo bridge, you will want to block it before continuing . The most practical way if you don't have many tools at your disposal is: detach the plastic cover behind your guitar; next place skinny coins or picks between the part of the bridge that protrudes downward and the body till the gap between the flat part of the bridge (just below the bridge pickup) and the body is 3/32". Loosen the springs and tune to standard ‘A' 440.

If your guitar has a Floyd Rose tremolo system, add picks or coins till the bridge is level to the body, then take off the springs and tune to standard 'A' 440.

Electric guitar Setup Step 1: Adjust the truss rod

We do this to avoid the strings from touching the frets- and buzzing- as they vibrate. Put a capo on the first fret, and press the fifth string on the 17th fret with a finger (I use the middle) while lifting the 6th string so it presses against your finger-nail.

Use a spark-plug calibrator to measure the distance between the top of the 12th fret and the bottom of the fifth string.

Adjust the truss rod with an Allen key. Turn clock-wise (toward the first string) to loosen and counterclockwise (toward the 6th string) to tighten.

Notice: if you have access to the truss-rod just below the last fret instead of by the nut, invert directions.

Set action:

This means adjusting the height of the strings.
With the capo still on the first fret, gauge the space between the bottom of the strings and the top of the seventeenth fret using a 6-inch ruler in 64ths. Use the table below merely as a basic guideline: explore different possibilities until you find the height that fits you best.

Guitar Setup Step 2:Setting the height of the pickups

Determine the distance between the top of your pickups and the bottom of your strings (1st and 6th) when pressing at the last fret. Adjust as needed.

Fender Telecaster- 6th: 3/32nd-inch, 1st: 5/64"
Fender American standard, vintage sixth: 1/8", 1st: 3/32nd-inch
Gibson- 3/64nd-inch or 4/64nd-inch
Floyd Rose- sixth: 1/8th-inch, 1st: 3/32nd-inch. If it has humbuckers 3/32nd-inch on both sides
Ultra, Plus- 1/16" on either side
4 string bass guitars- 4th: 1/8", 1st 3/32". Or, 1/16th-inch on both sides.
5 and 6 string bass guitars- 6th/5th: 7/64th-inch, 1st: 5/64"

The general idea is that pickups should give similar signal intensity no matter pickup or string.

Test to determine if the strings buzz and adjust as needed. Eliminating fret buzz completely is neither probable nor crucial. Set so that your guitar is comfortable to play, and the buzz cannot be heard through the amp.

Electric guitar Setup Step three: Setting the intonation

Tune your electric guitar with an electronic tuner, utilizing the natural harmonics on the twelfth fret. When pressing the string on the 12th fret, you'll notice a similar pitch.

If the tuner says it is too flat, then shorten the vibrating part of the string by tweaking the saddle. If it is too sharp, elongate the vibrating portion.

After extending or shortening, tune to the natural harmonic again and repeat till you get it the way that you like.

However, if your guitar has a tremolo bridge system or a Floyd Rose tremolo system, put the springs back in place and tighten them slowly till the picks or coins fall out. Place the plastic covering back in place, and you are done!

Choosing which electric guitar to get can be tricky since there are so many varieties to choose from.Free Easy To Learn Guitar Tabs The process of deciding which electric guitar to get can be overwhelming so I plan to give some insight by comparing two of the most popular guitars out there: the Gibson Les Paul Standard and the Fender Stratocaster.

The Gibson Les Paul Standard is one of those guitar that have achieved widespread mass appeal and praise from great guitarists such as Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin and Slash, former guitarist for Guns 'n Roses. An absolutely drop dead gorgeous guitar the Les Paul has a carved maple top, trapezoid inlays and comes in colors such as Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Desert Bust and a variety of other colors. It comes with Burstbucker pro pickups, rosewood fingerboard, tune-o-matic bridge and gold top hat knobs. This guitar also has a seriously powerful tone and it can scream with ease. This powerful tone comes from the thick mahogany body. The Les Paul also has one of the most playable necks out there and almost anyone can pick one up and feel as though they have owned it their whole life. Those two Burstbucker pro pickups sound amazing and you can easily switch between them with the 3-way toggle switch. It also has two volume knobs as well as two tone knobs, which allows you to have 'that much more' control over your sound.

The Fender Stratocaster has probably the most recognizable look and tone out there. The Strat was made famous by Jimi Hendrix who completely changed the way the guitar was played. An absolute showman he is still regarded by many as the greatest guitarist that ever lived. With colors such as black and 3 color sunburst, this guitar is as much a joy to play as it is to look at. Fender also give you a choice between a Rosewood or Maple Neck. Rosewood is said to have more sustain, while the maple neck is said to have a brighter sound. However most people can barely tell the difference between the two. The best thing to do is to go out to you local guitar shop and try each one out for yourself and see which one sounds better to you. The Strat comes with 3 single coil pickups, 2 tone knobs and 1 volume knob.

Both these guitar have their own set of unique characteristics and qualities but both are extremely versatile and can switch easily between jazz, rock, blues and even metal and still sound good.
