Guitar Plectrums & Guitar Strings

There is a wealth of guitar accessories available and many manufacturers make the same type of product. Many products come do the same thing but have large differences in price point so this can sometimes be confusing for many new guitarists.

The old saying “You get what you pay for” does ring true in some circumstances but the volume and quality of guitar accessories available are ever becoming harder to distinguish. For example: If you were buying a product made of a solid wood, this would cost much more than a product made of plywood, why? Simply because the raw materials are more expensive.

The guitar accessories I am going to talk about are guitar plectrums and guitar strings.

Guitar Plectrums (Picks) are usually small triangular pieces of plastic that you use to strike the strings of your guitar with. Plectrums have many different thicknesses, materials, and sizes that all factor into the job they do, these variants create a different sound. More thinner and flexible plectrums generally are best suited to playing rhythm guitar, as they pass the strings quickly with less resistance. You’ll also hear a lot more of a flicking sound (a little like a scratch) as they pass over the string that is to some, desirable. This only really happens with the thinnest of plectrums.

The thicker picks can be used more for lead guitar playing, as they produce a good amount of attack. They generally produce a more even sound and you get less flicking sound as they pass the strings. However, the sound you produce will differ, dependant on how hard your plectrum grip is. If you have a rigid grip a thinner plectrum may be beneficial as trying to play fast with a thick plectrum could be tricky.

The plectrums I use are the Dava Control’s. The have a thinner central area that alters how hard the pick is dependant of how close to the tip you hold it. So I suppose you could call it a combination thickness plectrum. Guitar Plectrums only cost a few pence anyway so I would recommend getting a few different ones and try them out to see what you like best.

Guitar Strings come in different gauges, the first question you will be asked when you go into a music shop to buy a replacement set of strings is “what gauge do you want?”

String gauge affects the tone and the playability of your guitar. If you have a higher gauge string, there is greater tension. Heavy gauge strings generate a higher volume, however the greater the tension, the more finger pressure is needed to fret the strings properly.

One major benefit of higher tension strings is that they vibrate in a shallower fashion, which allows closer adjustment to the fret board before getting string buzzes. A pretty standard Acoustic guitar string gauge is 12-54, and 9-42 on electric guitars. Altering your string gauge may require adjustment to your guitar in order to maintain the same action (Height between the string and fret board). On the flip side, lower string tension will cause the strings to lie lower which may result in buzzing, but if you already have a high action then you could solve that problem with a new set of strings.

I actually prefer a medium gauge (a set of 10’s) string as it produces a more reliable string bend. The ones I use are the D’addario XL’s 10- 46 (regular light gauge) on my electric guitars and on my acoustic guitars I always use Brass wound D’addario EJ16 Light (Gauge 12-53). Brass strings produce a rich bright tonality that lasts well.

well first lemme say, nice choice (a takamine..theyre sweet guitars..better than most).
as to string choice i gotta answer with a question..what do you want to switch to medium strings FOR? arte you breaking strings too easily or often, and so hoping the medium will be a bit stronger and so l;ast longfer ? well, they will...but if this is the issue, developing a lighter stroke across the strings, a lightwer touch, is a way to saolve an issue like that, abd that way you'd get to keep uysing lights, and so keep the aded flexibility they give (can bend notes more and more nicely with them)
as a rule i find the thicker the string, the less flexible it is, so the more.."utilitarian" the strings will act(ie, like vibrato for voice, a bit of bendiness to the strings can offer ..character to the sound..the less bendiness, the stiffer they are, and i perceive thast as plain, unadorned..and so i call it utilitarian

having said that, for an acoustic medium strings are a common choice (lights are more often used on electrics)...an electric demands a lighter stroke across the strings (a lighter touch), it has to have the light strings....but an acoustic doesnt need them as much (because it IS a bit utilitarian (stiff, formal)..as a guitar..its supposed to be, and works best when a heavier stroke is used, and so that needs stronger strings that dont bend quite so easy..i'm saying theyre made for banging on hard...and to get volume from them....also, it is that a chord rythm is a percussive thing ---wheras the electric is for single string leads withy lots of bending
so all in all, most of the time a medium string is the best choice for an acoustic anyway

the effects of switching to a medium string will be
1- it wiill tend to cause you to develop a heavier stroke (you have to stroke harder with those.to get that jukebox rythm thing going
..if you use lighter ones, they may break too often fromn it

so its a trade off, but one that worksa and is necessary (I'd go with the medium, I'm saying)

2- switiching to them may cause you to need to have the guitar smith at the store set it up again for you (you know..adjust the bridges and truss rod..to let the thicker strings work ok (a thicker e a or d string(the wound ones) will buzz against the fretboard unless the trussrod is moved slightly to raise it away from it far enough...the trick is to have youre tstrings only as far as they have to be (awy fron the surface of the fretboard) and no more, because the close they are, the better the action (better bendiness! and also very much ..very very much the ease of not having to press too hard to make a chord (without that fret buzz happening)

3...this realy is ok for you to try...just put the mediums on..play it, if it goes into tune nicely still, and you dont notice any fret buzz problem or any problem with it requiring you to press too hard with your fingers just to make the notes (a light touch with the left hand is all that should be needed, and bar chords should be easy to make, not difficult..yopu shouldnt have to muscle the strings down with your fingers!!! ) so if no proble,m like that, and no fret buzz, and still goes into tune properly, then skip goiung to your guitar smith for a fresh "setup", because youre all set

but if you do find a problem, once youy put the merdium strings on,. no worry, no big deal..just have the sertup adjusted, and those rpoble,s will vanish, and it's quite normal and fine to make these kinds of adjustments...wswitch string g auges...even repeatedly if you end up switiching then switching back, its okay..it wont hurt your guitar!

so go ahead
and dont worry be happy
and use whatever string fits your style nbest, or just plain feels best for you

I used to do that...had an epiphone (a gibson) with an electric pickup...and a fuzzbox..and I'd play acoustic, but then kick the foot switch and switch to electric sound...(((so a song that starts slow and sweet, then gets heavy.....was kind of my style....neil young too was kind of half and half...)

and I used a medium string, it did require a fersh setup, it did lead to a heavewier hand..I often wished I'd just bought an electtric in the first place...a nioce les paul (which has a thicker neck..more towards the feel of an acoustic...
but...I didnt get that , I got the beatbox, the epiphone...and it made me heavy handed..I was tough on strings, thasy HAD TO be more durable (I couldne even THINK of using lights! ((they'd start snapping half way through one seession!)

so this is a third concern I'd point to-->what it may cause for your playoing style..upou know, what you learn at the start beconmes the way you'll always be....I had a friend who took lessons, and he was always mopre adepy at chord usew than me..he used

Changing the Guitar Strings

The first question that comes to the mind of an amateur guitarist while changing guitar strings is how to know what is best for the guitars. First, the user needs to know when to change the strings. This can be decided by looking at the strings of the guitar. Well, a lot of things can happen. It might be discolored; the shapes might get distorted; it might be rusty; or may be showing signs of wear and tear; or might not be sounding well. All these are indications that, its time for strings change.

When the guitar strings get old they tend to be less dazzling and don't sound good, hence, the need for changing them, and that too soon. Their main utility is not to look good but to sound good. Everything else comes secondary. During performance, old strings might give problems and tunes can get lost when it is needed most.
